Idaho Huskers Newsletter: Fall Kick-off Edition
Hello fellow Husker Fans!! A new football season is fast approaching in fact with the recent break in the heat (I'm writing this on July 30th), I could almost smell the crisp air of fall and football season! I can't wait for the season opener on September 2nd.
This should be an exciting year. Most of the 'experts' are predicting the Huskers to win the Big 12 North. From all the articles that I've read, the team has been making strong prgess this summer. There have been some terrific reports about some of the junior-college players who will be new names this fall. These guys may not be the same Huskers we had during the Devaney and Osborne eras, but they are the Nebraska Cornhuskers!
The defense is supposed to be very good, with the potential to be great. The offense is suposed to be much improved. Who knows what could happen if we can run the ball, protect the passer and have the defense play great? Whatever the outcome, this will be an exciting season. I hope you will join us to watch the games at either of our official watch sites - Cheerleaders in Eagle or Hooters in Boise. Both are family friendly and smoke fee, so bring the kids and yell loud!!
I will continue to send out weekly emails with game information, so if your email address has changed since last season, please let me know. Send any changes to john@idahohuskers.com. You also need to visit www.idahohuskers.com for updates on chapter news and links to your favorite Husker websites. You will also find updates on a couple of our fall activities.
Rake-Up Boise is November 18th this year. I know it sounds like work, but if you have never participated, you haven't had the opportunity to see the appreciation on the face of the person's yard you've just cleaned up. Plus you've missed out on getting to know some fellow Husker fans on a different level and have some fun! Please consider taking 1-2 hours to help out our community on November 18th.
We will also be holding our 4th annual food drive in October, collecting non-perishable food items for local food banks. This year's theme is the "Football Fans for Food Challenge". I would like to see you all challenge a friend who is a fan for another team (college or professional) to match your donation. I'm challenging 2 friends who are Oregon Duck fans to tag their donation and bring it to one of our watch sites. If we all did this, we could easily double our contributions. So put a note in your donation sack and tell us which team you are supporting!
Finally, because most of our members have voiced that their focus is joining together to watch Husker Football game (and there is nothing wrong with that), we will continue to only send out one brief newsletter each year. If your input changes, we will change, but for now, this is it! However, some of you have asked me "why don't you charge dues?" The answer -- the board doesn't feel that there are enough other annual expenses and enough additional benefits for you to justify charging an annual membership fee. But if you feel you want to make a donation to the chapter, please make your check payable to the Idaho Huskers and send it to me at 5114 N. Morninggale Way Boise, ID 83713. An alternative to donaintinf to the Idaho Huskers is to donate to the Nebraska Alumni Association or a University Fund. If you want more information on this contribution avenue, please contact me by email, or call me at 938-4995.

Nebraska ex-pats root for their team at Boise Hooters
Idaho Huskers claims more than 400 members
B.S. who?
Hooters Restaurant was a piece of Lincoln in Boise Saturday, a small Boise State University pennant lost in a sea of University of Nebraska red and white.
Most of the dozens of red and white-clad fans who packed Hooters, on Franklin Road near Milwaukee Street, are members of the Idaho Huskers, a group Nebraska alumnus Corby Robinson, class of 1992, co-founded eight years ago for a purely pragmatic reason.
"I couldn't find my game on TV any more, so I figured if I got enough people together, any bar would put our game on," Robinson said.
It worked. On Saturday, an entire room at Hooters, complete with two flat-screen televisions, was devoted to the Cornhuskers' Big 12 championship match with the University of Oklahoma. So were several other TVs in the main dining area.
Whenever the Huskers got a first down or made a good defensive play, red-and-white pompoms danced in the air and loud cheers rippled through the restaurant. Whenever they didn't, a handful of outnumbered Sooners fans clapped meekly.
For Cornhusker fans, there was little to root for most of the game. A shot of former coach Tom Osborne got the biggest ovation during the first 25 minutes as Nebraska kept making mistakes.
The rest of the game wasn't much better for the Huskers, who lost 21-7.
Though BSU colors were mostly absent at Hooters, the game meant a lot to Boise: The winner is almost certainly destined to play the Broncos in the Fiesta Bowl.
Idaho Huskers claims more than 400 members and regularly gets 50 to 100 people to game-watching parties at Hooters, said the group's president, John Bruns, class of 1981.
"Being a Nebraska fan — it's just bred into you," said Bruns, who moved to Boise in 2000 after living his entire life in Nebraska.
Darron Funk lives in Boise and grew up Pocatello but started rooting for Nebraska while living in Lincoln.
"I think it's just the fever of the fans," he said. "It's Lincoln — the whole town shuts down on game day."
Funk was the only fan interviewed who didn't firmly say, "Nebraska" when asked who he would root for if Nebraska plays BSU in the Fiesta Bowl. "I'm going to have to wear a Nebraska hat and a Boise jersey," he said.
Mike Morehouse, Hooters' general manager and a Cornhusker partisan, summed up why Nebraska fans are so attached to their team:
"It's all Nebraska has."
